SOME  RECENT  PROJECTS Rehabilitation Waterfront Tanjung Balai Asahan   Tanjung Balai Asahan is located at the bank of the river Asahan, some 15 km upstream from Malacca Strait, at the eastcoast of Sumatera, Indonesia. The Government of this town wants to improve the Waterfront, by reclaiming a stretch of embankment along the existing shore, using this area for new, modern buildings. The local company "CV Sungai Asahan Lestari" asked for advice and support of the "Netherlands Senior Experts".   An alternative design of the embankment is made, using sand from the bottom of the river, the slope at the riverside protected by mattresses and quarrystone. The contractor is advised to make these mattresses with local available materials, such as bamboo, ijuk and palmleaves and with local manpower. Only the geotextile for sandtihgtness is imported from Holland.   Also working-methods, -schemes and -drawings are made to assist the contractor. (Client: Local Government and Contractor)

Industrial & Harbour Development  The Gambia, West Africa, is a small country, extending for some 330 km from Atlantic Ocean on both sides of the river Gambia.  The economy is largely depending on tourism along the Atlantic coastline and on peanut production.   To enhance more economical resourcesw, a private company is developing an industrial site and wharf at the border of the river Gambia, some 20 km from the Atlantic. Advice and design of lay-out, survey, dredging, quawall and jetty construction, with local available materials. (Client: PUM, Netherlands Management Co-operation Programme)

Training for Dredging  In time past, dredging skills and expertise were based on practical experiences, learning from older men.  Nowadays it is essential to have also more understanding of theoretical background, influence of soil properties and other aspects. Co-operating with other specialists we offered: supplementary courses for dredge masters and mechanical engineers of the Dutch Dredging companies; basic course Dredging for civil engineers of Port Authorities and Consultancies; examing on a course "Advanced Dredging Technology" for young engineers of Dutch Dredging contractors. Reinforced Soil Construction   To connect the centre of the Netherlands to southern Europian countries, a fast railway connection is under construction. This includes the building of railway embankments, sometimes where available space is very restricted due to present existing lines. Design and calculation of a steep slope construction, using reinforced soil with geotextile sandbags and geogrid reinforcement. (Client: combination of contracting companies)

Wetland Restoration   The river Danube, with a catchment area of 800 km² is passing fifteen countries. Part of this area is wetland "Kopacki Rit" situated in the north-east of Croatia, between the rivers Danube and Drava. A wetland of global importance, habitat for many birds and fish species. Since the construction of many dams and water-basins upstream, water regime changed drastically, causing much siltation.   Restauration is planned by maintenance dredging, restoring water regime by dams and flood gates.   Proposed is a plan of action with putting on a special self-supporting and dismountable cuttersuction dredger, using the dredged soil for landscaping.
